International Boarding

About international boarding

Boarding at Rookwood is open to both UK and overseas boarders.

We recommend that the minimum time that an overseas boarder would spend with us is half a term. This ensures that we can get to know the student well and make sure that their stay is positive and beneficial.

International boarders are enrolled as full Boarders.

Guidance

Overseas pupils must have a guardian in the UK who will be available to collect and care for them in emergencies or in case of illness. Guardians also ensure that a boarder is looked after during holidays and works with the boarding staff to arrange holiday time travel.

In order conform with current UK regulations (National Minimum standards for Boarding 2022) the school has a duty to ensure the suitability and safety of guardians, it is therefore preferable that a Guardianship agency is appointed rather than a family member. This ensures that a Guardian is regulated and checked for their suitability to be with young people.

We can provide a useful list of accredited Guardianship agencies but are not able to recommend any one of them in particular.

Pupils outside of the European Union need to obtain a ‘Tier 4 (Child)’ visa from the UK Home Office. The Home Office will only issue this if the school has issued a “Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies” (CAS) and if it can be shown that there are sufficient funds to pay for the education.

For the school to produce a CAS pupils will need to provide references, records of academic attainment, take an English language test and undergo an interview (which can be done using the Internet).
